Basgo

Situated approximately 40 kilometers west of Leh along the Indus River, Basgo is a historic village famed for its dramatic mud-brick fortress ruins and ancient monastic complex. Serving as the political center and royal capital of Lower Ladakh during the 15th and 16th centuries, Basgo played a crucial role in defending the kingdom during historic sieges. The citadel complex, dramatically perched atop steep clay formations, houses three sacred temples dedicated to Maitreya Buddha (Chamba). Renowned for its extraordinary 16th-century murals, gold-and-silver inscribed scriptures, and giant copper statue of the Future Buddha, Basgo was recognized by the World Monuments Fund for its immense heritage value.
